The Society evolved from a small West Virginia advisory council which began in 1968. Became The American Society for Surface Mining and Reclamation (ASSMR) name in 1982, and adopted the revised name of the American Society of Reclamation Sciences (ASRS) in 2020 to better reflect the broadening area of applications and interests of its membership.

Our society has evolved as a means to expedite technology transfer between members of similat organizations and interests in Canada, Australia, Great Britain, and the United States. All members of ASMR are automatically affiliate members of the IALR as well.

The basic objective in the efforts of our six Technical Divisions is to keep the members informed of the cutting-edge of basic and applied science of reclamation technology, both nationally and internationally. With the goal tho should be to provide a mechanism to encourage both written and verbal technology transfer.

Our organization’s leadership is comprised of an Executive Director, President, President-Elect, Past President, and a National Executive Council consisting of two 1st Year Delegates and two 2nd Year Delegates, an Early Career Representative and a Technical Divisions Representative.

Society programs and projects recognize the multidisciplinary nature of land reclamation and provide opportunities for those with specialized interests, from ecology to wetlands to organize workshops, prepare special sessions for the national meetings, and publish handbooks and manuals.
